St Raphael’s Garda Credit Union are proud to announce the launch of our new website. Our aim was to provide our members with a clean, user-friendly website that was easy to navigate on both mobile and desktop. So along with adjusting the design of our website, we’ve also added additional features and pages to make it easier for you to get the most out of your Garda Credit Union.

Below are some of our new features:

A Credit Union for Gardaí

St Raphael’s Garda Credit Union was set up by members of An Garda Síochána for members of An Garda Síochána in 1964 and went from having 119 members by the end of 1964 to now serving over 35,000 members. St. Raphael’s is proud to provide financial services to Gardaí and their family members and wanted our website to reflect this. We adjusted the theme of our website to include images and content based on the Gardaí and the services they provide.

Mobile Friendly

With over half of our members regularly visiting our website using their mobile phones, we knew it was important that our new website was 100% mobile-friendly and responsive. We’ve designed our site to function on all screen sizes without you needing to adjust your zoom settings!

Competition Section

As well as having a Prize Draw every month totalling €35,000, we also provide our members with opportunities to win sport tickets and more through social media competitions. However, following feedback from some of our members, we’re aware that not all of our members use social media – so we’ve moved our competitions to our website. This means that all of our members (who have subscribed to the prize draw) will be able to enter via our website.

Online Loan Application

Loan Interest Rebate 2018

$

If you attended our recent AGM or read our Annual Report, you may have heard that St. Raphael’s is rewarding some of our members with an interest rebate. But what exactly is an interest rebate and how does it affect you?

A loan interest rebate is a way for St Raphael’s to reward members who have borrowed from us throughout the year. In simple terms, a rebate is a partial refund of the interest that a member paid on a loan.

Do I qualify for a Loan Interest Rebate?

This year’s loan interest rebate applies to members who paid interest on an Everyday Loan for the year ending 30 September 2018.

How much do I receive?

A loan interest rebate of 15% was announced for the year ending 30 September 2018. This effectively means that the interest rate on the Everyday Loan for 2018 was reduced from 8.25% to 7.01%.  So, for example, if you paid €500 in interest during the last financial year, you’ll receive a refund of €75.

How do I claim my refund?

You don’t need to do anything. The rebate will automatically be lodged into your share account.

Once again we’d like to thank all of our members for their continued loyalty and support throughout the year and look forward to working with you again in 2019.

Have you tried our Budget Planner?

$

It’s important to plan for the year ahead, especially when it comes to your finances and bills.

One way to easily manage your monthly outgoings is to open a budget account with your credit union. St. Raphael’s provides all of our members with a Budget Account free of charge.

How do Budget Accounts work?

A budget account spreads the cost of your bills evenly over the space of a year. Using the online budget planner, you can easily calculate how much your bills and expenses will be over a 12 month period. You then pay a fixed amount every month to cover the cost of all of your bills. So you don’t need to remember when to pay bills, arrange payment or about unexpectedly high bills.

What are the benefits of a budget account?

  • No unexpectedly large bills
  • Always pay your bills on time – no late fees
  • Free for all members
  • Reduces time spent paying individual bills

How to get started:

  1. Choose which bills you want to include in the budget plan.
  2. Using the budget calculator, estimate how much each bill will be over the twelve-month period.
  3. Add a 5% contingency to allow for emergencies or bill increases.
  4. Depending on whether how you want to add funds to your account, set up salary deductions or direct debit using the application form.

The Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe TD, today announced the appointment of our CEO, Claire Byrne to the Credit Union Advisory Committee (CUAC).

CUAC is a statutory committee operating under the Dept. of Finance and is established to advise the Minister on certain Credit Union related matters.

This is a prestigious appointment for Claire and for us all in St. Raphael’s. We are delighted and proud to have direct representation on CUAC at such an important time for credit unions. I am sure you will all join with me in congratulating her and wishing her well in this new role. I have no doubt she will make an enormous contribution and her considerable expertise will benefit the work of the committee and in turn the entire sector.

Claire’s appointment is a part time role and will not impact her role as CEO of St. Raphael’s Garda Credit Union.

Have you completed your Form of Nomination?

Some may not think it’s relevant right now but it’s important to take the necessary steps to protect your family in the event of your death. At St Raphael’s we regularly see many instances where deceased members have not updated their ‘form of nomination’ which complicates matters for their next of kin. For those members who have filled it in, their next of kin can access up to €23,000 following their death, which can often make life less complicated at a traumatic time.

What is a Form of Nomination?

A nomination is an instruction whereby a member nominates someone (usually a family member) to receive their shares in the credit union upon their death. By completing a form of nomination, it enables your family to have access to you funds without having to wait for legal matters, such as Grant of Probate, to be sorted first. The maximum amount payable is €23,000. Any balances exceeding €23,000 will form part of your estate. A Form of Nomination supersedes a Will.

How do I complete a form of nomination?

Completing a form of nomination is easy, simply download a nomination form by clicking here, sign it and return it to the credit union. If you call us or drop in we can also give you a form.

Some more information…

  • If you do not complete a nomination form, the proceeds of your account will form part of your estate and will require a Grant of Probate to be released, which can take up to a few years.
  • You may amend or cancel your nomination at any time by completing a new nomination form.
  • If your nominee dies before you, you nomination is automatically revoked and you will need to complete a new form of nomination. If not, the proceeds will form part of your estate and would require a grant of probate.
  • Your nomination will be automatically cancelled if you marry after completing a form of nomination. A new form of nomination should be completed with your husband/wife’s details. However, if you re-marry, this does not automatically cancel your most recent nomination. Therefore, you’re ex-husband/wife, will receive the funds in your account.

Introducing our New Logo

St Raphael's Logo

After more than 50 years, St. Raphael’s has decided to change the way it looks with a new identity and a fresh appearance. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, we are no longer members of the Irish League of Credit Unions and our previous logo emanated from our membership. Secondly, our old logo was showing its age and did not reflect the dynamic, innovative and member-focused  organisation that we aim to be.

Although it looks quite different, there are key elements the same. We have retained the four circles, representing the four provinces of Ireland. We kept to the traditional Garda colours; the two shades of blue and the gold, a clear reference to the Garda badge. The four interconnecting shapes represent the co-operative nature of the credit union and the strong, confident lines reflect our strength and security. Over the coming weeks and months, you will see us using our new logo in lots of different forms. We believe the new identity respects the past while looking to the future. We hope you like it as much as we do.

It is with deep sadness that we learned late last night of the passing of our dear friend Brian Sheehan.  Brian was one of our founding Directors and known to everyone not only in An Garda Síochána but to many in the credit union movement.  He was first appointed as Secretary to the Board in August 1964 and held that position for 16 years until 1979.  He was Chairman of the Board for 4 years and joined the staff as Loans Officer when he stepped down from the Board in 1984.  He was appointed Assistant Manager in 1991 and remained in that position until his retirement from the credit union in 1998.  Known for his gentle manner and kind and caring ways, Brian was a quiet but steady influence on the development of St Raphael’s for over 30 years.  He was passionate about St Raphael’s and worked tirelessly for the betterment of members.  We will always be indebted to him for his contribution.  When we moved to our current offices at St Raphael’s House, our Board Room was named in his honour.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Removal Wednesday evening (22nd May) to Church of Our Lady Mother of Divine Grace, Howth Road, Raheny, Dublin 5, for 5:30 pm. Funeral Mass at 11:30 am Thursday morning, followed by burial at Dardistown Cemetery, Cloghran, Co Dublin.
